“Blanket Exercise”

The Blanket Exercise is an interactive activity which explores the history of Canada and the plight of Indigenous people since the arrival of Europeans to our country. The Blanket Exercise begins with blankets arranged on the floor to represent Canada (Turtle Island) prior to Colonization. Participants, who represent Indigenous peoples, begin by moving around the blankets, trading items.  As a narrator reads from a script, gradually their lives change, as more and more Europeans take over their land.  Participants respond to cues read from prepared scrolls.  By the end only a few Indigenous people remain on the blankets.  A meaningful sharing circle completes the Exercise.  Please bring blankets.   The Exercise will take the place of the usual church service.  It will take at least two hours, perhaps a bit longer.  Afterwards bannock and preserves, tea and water will be available.
