The Unitarian Church of Edmonton is a self-supporting institution. Our pledges are used to pay for staff salaries, programs and basic operating expenses like heat and light.  Contributions from members and friends also pay for the newsletter, the order of service and supplies for the children’s program. We also pay an annual fee per member to the Canadian Unitarian Council to support national and regional programs.  All members have a say in how their money is spent when we pass the budget at the Annual Congregational meeting each spring.

Donations
All contributions are fully tax deductible.  You do not have to be a member of the congregation to make a tax deductible contribution.

Donations can be made by:

    • enclosing a cheque or cash in envelopes provided at the church;
    • postdated cheques;
    • preauthorized bank withdrawal
    • credit card (Canada Helps or ATB Cares).

For more information, contact the Church Administrator by phone at (780) 454-8073 or by email at chadmin@uce.ca.

I’m not sure that I have ever seen a time in my life when the truth has been so hard to find. Fake news proliferates widely, there are “science-deniers” in charge of scientific organizations, and the politics to the south of us has gone from inspiring to terrifying in a single election. But it’s the fact that people are now believing all these falsehoods that really bothers me. It’s as if the truth filters have been ripped out of the world and thrown off a cliff. People are believing the most unbelievable stories without question. Mainstream media used to check stories and filter the most blatant falsehoods but now the mainstream media is in retreat; letting go of their skilled reporters as they lose market share to poorly researched blogs and opinion pieces.

Where will we find the truth in the world these days? Perhaps we need to climb the mountain and seek out the guru or the Buddha. Perhaps we need to find a place to meditate so that we can sort the good information from the false. Maybe we need to embrace our Unitarian 4th principle, “A free and responsible search for truth and meaning” and engage with the people in our church. Finding your truth has never been more important than in this era when we are surrounded by falsehoods and people that would mislead us. Now is the time to support finding truth by supporting your church.

The truth is, that your church needs your financial support. Between now and the end of March we are asking all members to complete a pledge form showing their financial support for the coming church year. We would like a pledge form from everyone please; from those with ongoing donations to those who can only give a small amount.

Take a moment to fill the pledge form and drop it in the collection plate or forward it to the church office. There is a pledge form attached to this newsletter; or, you can also pledge online at this link:

If you have any questions please contact me directly. I look forward to your generous pledges and donations in 2018.
