Our History

Welcome to the Unitarian Church of Edmonton

Our VISION

The Unitarian Church of Edmonton — a liberal religious, multi-generational congregation:

We celebrate a rich mosaic of free-thinking, spiritually-questing individuals joined in common support and action. We welcome diversity, pursue the common good, and work for justice. We believe in the compassion of the individual heart, the warmth of community, and the search for meaning in our lives.

Services for February
Services begin at 10:30 a.m.

February 5, 2012 “Homelessness and Poverty in Edmonton” Lance Beswick, Lay Chaplain
Lance, who works at Boyle Street Community Services, will be leading the service with speakers from Boyle Street.

February 12, 2012 "Reflections on Our Third Principle" Chorealis
We as Unitarian Universalists affirm acceptance of one another and encouragement of spiritual growth in our congregation. This morning Chorealis will perform music from the Taize tradition. Guest musicians are Alison Grant-Préville, flute and Marcus Fung, crystal bowls. Marcus will offer
a musical meditation before the service.

February 19, 2012 “Sharing the Lessons” Kat Hutter, DRE
In the children’s program, Sunday mornings at church are active, personal and participatory. This family day weekend we will have an intergenerational service that explores our church from the kid’s point of view. Expect storytelling, sharing over candles, songs, and a few hands on activities inspired by what our children have been learning.

February 26, 2012 Rev. Richard Reimer Lutheran Chaplain, University of Alberta
Struggling with forgiveness last year, I made it my Lenten discipline to read holocaust survivor Simon Wiesenthal's, "The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness." The cover of the book poses the provocative question, "You are a prisoner in a concentration camp. A dying Nazi soldier
asks for your forgiveness. What would you do?" I will reflect on what I gained from this exploration.

It is drawn from the history of the Christian Reformation in Czechoslovakia where Jan Hus asserted that all members of the congregation, and not only the priests, should be allowed to drink from the chalice at holy communion. Hus was burned at the stake for his efforts, but his followers persisted in building a church that believes in the "priesthood of all believers."
