About the Unitarian Church of Edmonton

The primary purpose of this community is to bring together those people who are in general agreement with individual freedom of belief, discipleship to advancing truth, the democratic process in human relations and the universal human community, so that they may hold religious meetings, promote social welfare and social responsibility, and further the knowledge and interests of Unitarian Universalism.

To this end, UCE offers many opportunities for fellowship, religious growth and learning, friendship and social action.

Our minister is chosen by the congregation to act as a guide to the church in ethical and theological matters. Lay chaplains are available to officiate at special ceremonies.

UCE is governed by its membership through congregational meetings and an elected Board of Trustees. Although we recognize no other hierarchical church authority, we, like other Unitarian Universalist churches, cooperate with other parts of the denomination through our membership in the Canadian Unitarian Council.

It is drawn from the history of the Christian Reformation in Czechoslovakia where Jan Hus asserted that all members of the congregation, and not only the priests, should be allowed to drink from the chalice at holy communion. Hus was burned at the stake for his efforts, but his followers persisted in building a church that believes in the "priesthood of all believers."
